Get in the festive spirit with a winter weekend break!

Christmas Shopping

We might not be in Bavaria, but a Christmas Market is the perfect way to get into the festive spirit, not to mention a great place for those last minute gifts or to sample lots of lovely food! As well as some lovely independent shops perfect for presents, Bude has several Christmas Fayres and markets to enjoy, including a Beach Hut Christmas Market. Exeter hosts a Christmas Market in the Cathedral grounds and Plymouth has a Winter Wonderland with ice skating rink, fairground rides, santa's grotto plus food and craft stalls. Padstow Christmas Festival is another very popular event with gifts, food and chef demos to tempt you.

Winter Wonderlands

There's nothing like Christmas lights to get you into the festive mood. The most famous are in the beautiful fishing village of Mousehole on the far south west coast, but if that's too far to travel, then head up the coast to Clovelly to see their illuminations instead - equally as beautiful!

Many of the South West's attractions are transformed into a winter wonderland with beautiful illuminations at night. Choose from Rosemoor Glow, Heligan by Night, The Eden Project and Dartmoor Zoo to name just a few. You can also enjoy ice skating at the Eden project right through until February half term and Rosemoor has its winter sculpture trail running throughout November and December.

It is also the season of winter carnivals - with Hatherleigh's famous torchlit procession and flaming tar barrels on the 11th November and Holsworthy Carnival the following week.

Santa and Steam

Santa will be making appearances at all of the favourite family attractions throughout December including The Big Sheep and The Milky Way. He will also be busy on the trains too - most of the steam railways reopen for the Christmas period with special trains and events, including Bodmin & Wenford, Lynton & Barnstaple and Lappa Valley - all a great way to entertain the kids. The spectacular Train of Lights at Dartmouth is also running again - we went on the very first year and it is definitely worth the trip!

Treat Yourself

Whether it's a hot chocolate with all the trimmings, or an afternoon tea, there's nothing nicer than some festive food and drink! Bude Castle, Rectory Farm tearooms and Strawberry Fields Farm shop are all offering festive cream teas throughout December.
